A new study published in the Journal of Diabetes aimed to explore the correlation of serum Fetuin-B to intrahepatic triglyceride (IHTG) content, and the association of Fetuin-B with the risk of insulin resistance in adults. In this cross-sectional study, 1,318 obese adults were enrolled, who underwent serum Fetuin-B test and hepatic ultrasonography scanning. In addition, IHTG content was measured in a subgroup of 428 obese adults. The findings showed that individuals with highest levels of serum Fetuin-B had the highest prevalence rate of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and the highest IHTC content. Additionally, increased tertiles of serum Fetuin-B were significantly associated with increased fasting insulin and to the prevalence rates of insulin resistance. Meanwhile, IHTG content was independently and positively correlated with serum Fetuin-B level. On the other hand, serum Fetuin-B was independently associated with increased risk of insulin resistance, with the adjusted odd’s ratio of per standard deviation increase of Fetuin-B of 1.14. Therefore, the results demonstrated the role of Fetuin-B linking liver fat accumulation to insulin resistance in humans.
